Cable Freedom Is a Click Away

Welcome to our living room. Take a seat, make yourself comfortable. Would you like to watch a movie, or the new “Family Guy” episode?

Evan Sung for The New York Times
Devices that fell short of providing the best TV viewing experience and program options lie discarded in the living room of Nick and Danielle Bilton. More Photos »
Oh, that, over there. You want to know why there’s a pile of gadgets and wires on the floor? My wife and I usually don’t talk about that clutter. We actually refer to it as the Gadget Graveyard. Mostly, we pretend it doesn’t even exist. But since you asked, I’ll explain.

This digital necropolis isn’t your typical sanctuary for retired devices. Instead, here you’ll find technologies that tried to provide the best viewing experience and program options with a television, but ultimately fell short. Everything is relatively new, and comparatively unusable — to me at least.

Among this pile you can find my old remote controls and wires from my cable box. Then there’s the dreaded Apple TV, now a $250 paperweight. There’s also the $80 Roku box, a device that allows you to stream video from Netflix, Amazon.com and other sites directly to your television. But wait, there’s more! A Vudu player, a Slingbox and a handful of other single-serving contraptions.

Those devices are all behind me now. I disconnected everything, threw it to the side and canceled the cable months ago. Instead, now I have a Mac Mini, wireless mouse and a Microsoft Xbox hooked up to my television.

This quest for cable freedom has been a couple of years in the works. Before I called the cable company to bid my farewell I imagined that I would need a vast array of devices to fill the entertainment void: a device for games, something for television shows, a contraption for streaming movies through Netflix and, finally, something to control all of the above. But it turns out a computer can do all those tasks with some software upgrades and a wireless keyboard and mouse.

I have to be honest, this isn’t as easy as just plugging a computer into a monitor, sitting back and watching a movie. There’s definitely a slight learning curve. One difficult part of this equation was getting used to the wireless mouse. We use a mouse called the Loop, made by Hillcrest Labs, that costs $99. The Loop looks more like a chocolate-frosted doughnut with buttons than something that navigates a television set. To navigate the screen you hold it out and wave your hand from side to side as if you are conducting an orchestra.

As for the computer, you don’t specifically need a Mac Mini. This set up can work with most inexpensive PCs; just make sure the video card can handle the streaming video requirements. Our refurbished Mac Mini cost $380 online.

Although the initial investment was costly, totaling $550, it took only a few months to recoup the money. Back in the olden days of cable we were forced to shell out a relatively standard $140 a month, for television service alone. This cost gave us access to a digital video recorder and hundreds of unwatched TV channels.

Contrast this with today, where our only expense is $9 a month to stream Netflix videos from the Web and the $30 a month that we always spent on an Internet connection. O.K., maybe that’s not completely accurate. When the wireless keyboard died a few weeks ago I was forced to spend another $4 for two new AA batteries. We’ve not yet recovered from that financial loss.

We still come home from work and watch any number of shows, just like the people who continue to pay for cable. We just do it a little differently, starting the computer and then using services like Hulu, Boxee, iTunes and Joost. Another interesting twist to this experience is that we’re no longer limited to consuming traditional programming. With these applications we can spend an entire evening flicking through videos from YouTube, CollegeHumor or Web-only programs.

Here are a few of the applications on our home setup:

Boxee is probably the most clicked icon on our television. You can download this free open-source application from Boxee.tv. It’s important to note that it’s still in test phase and a little rough around the pixels, but over all it allows you to access almost any type of video content online. You can easily stream CNN, Current TV, PBS and more. Most important for us, Boxee easily allows access to the Netflix streaming service, which offers up thousands of movies and television shows (just not always the most popular options).

Next there is Hulu Desktop, the joint venture among Fox, NBC, ABC and many other mainstream programming outlets. This service allows you to watch more than 1,700 television shows, including traditional favorites like “30 Rock,” “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart” and “The Office.” Hulu’s downloadable desktop application, as opposed to hulu.com, works extremely well with large screens. Apple’s iTunes application replicates all the features of Apple TV, allowing you to buy or rent movies and listen to your music collection.

Be warned though that iTunes can get expensive. If you watch premium-cable television shows, you can pay more than $40 for the season of a single show. But even that is less than one month of cable. Since there are so many other entertainment options online, we just skip “Dexter” and “Weeds.” Trust me, there is a lot of great free or ad-supported content out there.

Finally there’s Joost.com. Although it’s not a downloadable application and only accessible through a Web browser, Joost offers free streaming movies and a strange variety of cartoons.

While Microsoft’s Xbox 360 (starting at $200), is not absolutely necessary for this setup, it delivers an array of lively entertainment options. I can, of course, play video games, but I can also rent movies (through the Xbox marketplace or through Netflix’s online viewing service), and browse Twitter and Facebook, with a new feature that lets you watch a streaming interface of your social networks flow across the screen.

I understand this kind of living room experience isn’t for everyone. It’s a lot less work to just click a button up or down on a standard remote control. And it can be difficult to explain how to use this unfamiliar toolbox of buttons, programs and devices.

Over Thanksgiving a friend graciously house-sat at our apartment. It took my wife more than an hour to write a detailed description explaining how to use our new TV setup. After explaining how to use the mouse and keyboard, we had to describe how to switch among applications. The instructions read:

“If you want to watch “Ugly Betty,” or “Saturday Night Live,” you will need to load up Hulu. If you’d like to watch some of the movies we’ve downloaded, you will have to quit Hulu, open up Boxee and navigate to the movies folder. To use Netflix, you’ll need to switch to the Xbox and. ... ” But after a few hours of randomly clicking into cyberspace, our friend figured it out.

There is one other showstopper. I know the sports and technology enthusiasts don’t often mix, but if you’re one of the few people who live in both of those worlds you might have to look for other options. To watch baseball you can buy a little dongle that plugs into the back of your computer and streams free over-the-air high-definition channels. I bought this for the Yankees games and it worked perfectly. If you’re an ESPN fan you have two options. Stick with cable, or go to a bar to watch the basketball games.

Over all, I couldn’t be happier with our computer television setup. Now, I just have to figure out what gadgets I’m going to buy with the $1,600 a year I no longer send to the cable company.

"Give The World Your Heart" TV to Debut With Live Webcast, Tuesday, Nov. 24

"Give The World Your Heart" TV to Debut With Live Webcast, Tuesday, Nov. 24

CHANTILLY, VA -- 11/23/09 -- Internet TV Network TV Worldwide (www.TVWorldwide.com), announced that it has been selected by Give The World Your Heart, Inc. (www.GTWYH.org) to produce and launch Give The World Your Heart TV (www.GTWYH.TV), an Internet TV Channel dedicated to the community of people interested in participating in positive, healthy activities to help themselves and others improve the planet and tally their heartbeats while doing so. The channel will launch with a live webcast featuring a panel of Give The World Your Heart advisors and experts at 12 PM Noon ET on Tuesday, November 24, 2009. Participants can view the webcast, register heartbeats and participate in the event interactively at www.GTWYH.TV.

Give The World Your Heart TV viewers will enjoy positive motivational programming, live webcasts, music video, documentaries and shows from participants from all over the globe, that encourage viewers to send their heartbeats in an effort to grow a new health heartbeat counting measurement called Total Gratitude Heartbeat Counter.

"The mission of Give The World Your Heart is to offer you and others, from all over the world, an opportunity and a means of connection by all the positive things that you and others do each day," stated Sandy Masin, Founder of Give The World Your Heart, a 501(c)(3) non-profit company. "This creates a positive, self satisfying atmosphere. All you really have to do is very simple. Just take a little time, get involved, record your heartbeats into the counter and enjoy what you did that day."

"I see counting total gratitude heartbeats as a way to maintain the trust of a Patient-Healthcare Provider covenant," remarked Dr. Bobby Garfinkel, a member of the Give The World Your Hearts Health Advisory Board. "When we work together giving our heart-felt intentions for a better outcome, then this level of trust may be just enough to see remarkable outcomes."

"The process is all inclusive as everyone counts, no barriers of race, religion, culture, gender, age, socioeconomic status, handicaps etc.," Masin added. "Everyone can contribute in some way and when they contribute they are changing the focus of the world. We are also offering the opportunity for charities, faith-based groups, clubs and businesses to develop their own heartbeat counter, which could be hosted on the organization's web site, encouraging everyone to add their heartbeats while giving stakeholders even more reason to become engaged interactively, and adding the group's heartbeats to the GTWYH world counter on a regular basis."

"This is certainly a departure from the professional industry content we feature on many of our Internet TV channels," commented Dave Gardy, Chairman and CEO of TV Worldwide. "But the community-building and interactive social media principles are the same as they would be for any Internet TV channel special interest group. It is always a pleasure to work with people that have an interest in making the world a better place, like the content and heartbeat contributors to Give The World Your Heart TV."

Video sharing website YouTube has begun streaming full-length television series to UK users

TV embraces world's biggest video-sharing site...only takes four years to do it

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

23 Nov 2009 :
Video sharing website YouTube has begun streaming full-length television series to UK users, following its deal with Channel 4 in October.

According to Google, the Shows section of YouTube offers 4,000 full-length programmes from 60 partners including Channel 4, ITN, BBC Worldwide and Al Jazeera.

Google plans to add more partners in the coming months, with Channel 4 indicating it will also continue to do deals with other services. The broadcaster will continue serving videos from its own catchup service, 4oD.

Channel 4's full back catalogue won't make its way to YouTube until 2010, though Father Ted and Brass Eye are among those already available.

The shows are free, but they feature a non-skippable 30-second advert that plays before the programme begins. The companies have confirmed they will share ad revenues generated by the service, though details of the deal were not disclosed.

"The YouTube community has always enjoyed the vibrant range of video on the site, from amateur make-up videos to professional TV highlights and everything inbetween," says YouTube director of video partnerships Patrick Walker.

"The Shows section of the site will make it easier for users to discover videos from the biggest names in British broadcasting, and help our content partners reach new audiences and generate new revenues."

The band wanted to connect with their legion of fans that might not have had the chance to catch them during the North American leg of their 35th-anniversary KISS/Alive 35 tour, a 44-city tour that continues through December 15.

"For 35 years, KISS has rocked all over the world to sold-out crowds and set the standard for what a rock show should be. This tour will solidify our place in history for having the loudest, most entertaining and hardest rockin' show in all of music," said Gene Simmons.

Users who own an Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft can click the Guitar Hero banner at the bottom of the screen and go directly to Xbox LIVE Marketplace on Xbox.com to purchase the KISS three-song track pack and queue it up for download to their Xbox 360 console. U2 on YouTube

YouTube is continuing its push into the live video streaming realm, despite assurances it gave last year that it wouldn’t enter the space because it was too expensive.

The Google-owned video website has streamed the Outside Lands concert and an Obama press conference in recent months, but now it’s going to stream the Rose Bowl concert of one of the world’s most popular bands: U2

The live streaming event, which begins on Sunday, October 25th at 8:30 PM PT, will be available in 16 countries. The live feed will be available on the U2 Official Channel, and feature a live Twitter() feed of chatter about the concert, exactly like what the company did for its full-length viewing of Taxi Driver.

The world’s largest video website, in a conference call earlier today, explained that it is seeking to experiment in live video. Clearly, YouTube() sees some type of potential in this emerging market, as live video players Ustream(), Justin.tv, and Livestream have started to prove the viability of this market.

U2 on YouTube

A U2 concert is one of the best events to live stream, in our opinion, given the band’s massive popularity. The question we’re still asking is: What exactly is the company’s plan with live streaming? In the meantime, we want to know: will you watch the concert? Let us know in the comments

Voddler: Free Movies and TV Streaming Service

Voddler: Free Movies and TV Streaming Service

Voddler is a new video startup that launch back in private beta back in July 2009. Currently it is rumoured that only 1,500 people have access to the site, so we wanted to run through the service for everyone else.
Voddler won’t be launched officially until sometime this fall, and then only in the Nordic countries [...]

Voddler won’t be launched officially until sometime this fall, and then only in the Nordic countries for starters. The agenda is to go global, though.

Voddler aims to do for movies and TV series what Spotify is doing for music. Although in private beta Voddler already seems to be getting a lot of buzz in Scandinavia, so we hope to let everyone else know about it.

Voddler is available for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux, Voddler will also be providing a Linux-based box with a pre-installed client that you can easily connect to your TV to get that home cinema feel.

Movies are of course a lot more bandwidth-intensive than music. How well Voddler works for you will depend on your Internet connection. To get 1080p HD quality you should have an 8 Mbit/s connection, for 720p HD quality you should have a 5 Mbit/s connection, and for DVD quality you should have a 2.5 Mbit/s connection. Contrast this with Spotify which only has to deal with music streaming and therefore works just fine with a mere 256 kbit/s connection.

Web TV network after 100,000 viewers

Web 2.0

A new venture, described as the new Zealand's first internet TV network, is aiming to attract 100,000 regular viewers a month to its portfolio of specialist local and international channels.

Ziln, the brainchild of two local technology companies specialising in online broadcasting - e-cast and NetsideTV - is starting today with a lineup of seven New Zealand channels playing scheduled and "video on demand" programming, plus 14 international news and business channels streaming live.

TelstraClear, the country's second largest telecommunications company, is backing the venture, which it will promote through its Clearnet customer website.

Ziln marketing director Phil O'Reilly said the network had been developed "to give New Zealanders the opportunity to tailor their viewing interests and to provide another outlet for local content providers".

O'Reilly said the local channels would feature New Zealand-made content not currently provided by mainstream television - covering home design, travel, shopping, real estate, history, science and extreme sport.

The international programming includes the popular Al Jazeera news channel and business news channel Bloomberg.
They, and the other international channels will be streamed live over the site, meaning Ziln viewers will see programmes at the same time they are shown around the world through satellite and terrestrial TV broadcasts.

Ziln plans to add more channels and aims to become the country's largest online video content platform.

According to Neilson Media Research's Panorama survey, 330,000 New Zealanders watched TV online last year, up from 194,000 in 2006.

The country's two major free-to-air television broadcasters, TVNZ and MediaWorks, have been investing heavily in the screening rights, technology and promotion of online video broadcast.

Ziln is chasing the advertising opportunities associated with internet TV. It says it can offer advertisers a mix of traditional video commercials plus website banner ads and links, as well as more "interactive" ad formats such as downloadable vouchers and redeemable offers linked to the content of the channel viewers are watching.

Ziln says within six months it expects to draw in 10 per cent of New Zealand's one million broadband customers, giving it a regular audience of 100,000 viewers a month.

It plans to expand its service to include video delivery via set-top boxes and media centres, allowing viewers to watch internet TV through their television sets.

Ziln also intends to extend the service to users of iPhones and other mobile devices.

For TelstraClear, the venture is a chance to promote the use of its broadband services and showcase the potential of its super-fast hybrid fibre coaxial networks in Wellington and Christchurch.

THE ZILN LINE-UP

Live streaming channels:
Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, BVN (Holland), CCTV 9 (China), Channel News Asia (Singapore), DWTV (Germany) Euronews, RTPi (Portugal), Russia Today, TV5 Monde (France), TVE (Spain), VOA (USA), Zee News (India).

Video on Demand channels

Obama to Discuss Health Reform With Faith Community By Conference call

The debate over health reform has divided Christians, who have launched campaigns both denouncing and championing the controversial legislation.
Tomorrow President Obama is expected to participate in a conference call to address the faith community's concerns about health reform. Organized by Faith in Public Life, the call is to include such leaders as Florida megachurch pastor Joel Hunter, Sojourners President Jim Wallis and Atlanta pastor Cynthia Hale.

The address, which is open to the public and will be streamed live online, comes as part of the "40 Days for Health Reform" campaign that includes a series of prayer rallies and a National Healthcare Sermon Weekend Aug. 28-30.

The effort, led by a coalition of more than 30 religious denominations and organizations, launched last week with a national television ad featuring evangelical, Catholic and mainline pastors calling for health reform. (See video at end of article.)

Meanwhile, a coalition of more than 40 pro-life leaders has released a video that claims all the pro-life gains of the last 35 years will be in jeopardy if the president's health reform plan is implemented. Although the bill does not explicitly state whether abortion would be mandated coverage under a government health system, pro-life leaders say the bill's ambiguity on the issue would eventually lead to taxpayer-funded abortion and the largest expansion of the practice since Roe v. Wade. (Click here to watch the pro-life video.)

"Without an explicit exclusion of abortion in any health care reform bill, abortion will be included," said Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the pro-life Susan B. Anthony List in the video produced by Stop the Abortion Mandate.

Comprised of a cross-section of pro-life groups--including Focus on the Family, Concerned Women for America, TheCall and the Traditional Values Coalition--Stop the Abortion Mandate is calling on Christians to lobby their congressional representatives to oppose the legislation.

Family Research Council and Focus on the Family Action also have launched grass-roots lobbying campaigns against the bill. Since the beginning of August, tens of thousands of letters have been sent to Congress through efforts led by the American Center for Law and Justice and the Susan B. Anthony List.

Christians on both sides of the debate argue that health reform is a moral issue. Reform supporters say thousands of uninsured Americans delay care for serious illnesses or are saddled with exorbitant bills for health care.

"As pastor of an urban-core church within walking distance of major hospitals, it seemed like some people in our congregation might as well have lived 1,000 miles away from those shining institutions," said John Hay Jr., pastor of West Morris Street Free Methodist Church in Indianapolis. "They often put off a serious health problem until it reaches chronic stages and then make an emergency run. This is no way for the most blessed country in the world to treat its most vulnerable citizens."

Bill opponents argue that reforming health insurance does not have to include a government takeover of health care. In a series of commentaries opposing the "health scare" reform legislation, prophetic minister Rick Joyner said the proposed health system would lead to euthanasia and an alarming move toward socialism.

"I see doom for many people ... because this thing will end up in rationing very fast, if not immediately," said Joyner, founder of MorningStar Ministries. "Then you've got to choose, who's going to receive the health care? Who's going to receive what may save their lives? ... This is about a whole lot more than health care; it's about control."

A lounge room revolution

The convergence between computers and TV sets – between the internet and lounge room – which has long been promised but has never quite arrived, seems to be upon us.

In October, Foxtel will launch a small innovation that could change everything for the TV industry.

It‘s called a powerline network extender, and simply connects a TV set in the lounge room with a computer in another room, through the electricity wires. A small device sits at the power points of each machine and connects them via the power grid in the house, eliminating the usual interference that’s caused by other things that are connected to it, such the fridge, microwave oven and lamps.

I haven’t seen it demonstrated yet, so I can’t guarantee it works as promised. But in a way, it doesn’t matter. NEC and others sell these things already as replacements for, or add-ons to, home wireless networks. And in any case, TV sets can already be connected to the internet via computers, either by wires in the same in room or wireless in other rooms.

The Foxtel plan later this year is more about marketing than technology.

Foxtel’s plan is to make a version of internet television that is easy to use, and then flog it. Of course, the last thing any subscription TV company will want to do is let its customers loose on the internet so they can stream channels from all over the world, along with YouTube and pirated movies, to watch in their lounge rooms.

Obviously it can’t stop us – or rather, our children – doing that at our computers. But if you connect to the internet after October via a Foxtel IQ box you will simply be able to download “catch-up” programming – several hundred shows and movies that you might have missed.

It’s not clear whether the Foxtel boxes will also provide access to the ABC’s excellent iView service, which is its own catch-up programming service, currently only accessible by computer. Hopefully it will.

The full convergence of TV and the internet, and the destruction of commercial television, has been talked about for at least ten years but has never happened.

It has not been prevented by regulation or by technology, which has long been available, but by two simple human truths: we need to be marketed to, and we like to watch TV with someone else, not alone.

Nobody has marketed internet TV – and packaged it up so it can easily be done by non-geeks – because you can’t make money from it. Internet TV is basically a money destruction machine.

Foxtel’s most recent generation of set-top boxes, both standard and high definition, have been capable of connecting to the internet and streaming squillions of global channels and movies to us for at least 12 months. But this has been held back because Foxtel wants to “get it right”.

No doubt that means getting the business model right, and that means a “walled garden”: that is, you won’t be able to go wandering off wherever you like, but you can use the internet to download specific movies and programmes from Foxtel.

Eventually, the uncontrolled internet will steal into our lounge rooms, as it did long ago into our studies, offices and kids’ bedrooms. But the reason that did not produce an entertainment revolution and the end of commercial television as we know it, is that we watch TV together (even, sometimes, with our children).

I’m writing this column on a nice big Macintosh screen at my desk at home, almost as big as a TV and with a better picture. Occasionally, between articles, I’ll look at something on YouTube, or the ABC’s iView, or even a bit of a movie.

But when I watch TV, I do it with my partner, on the couch: it’s the main thing most couples do together. And setting up the telly to connect to the internet, with a wireless keyboard or complicated remote, is just too hard. Who can be bothered? There’s usually something on worth that’s watching, or perhaps just a replay of the 2000 Grand Final to while away the hours.

Anyway, from October, Foxtel is apparently going to start marketing the internet to us and making it easy – either through its new internet-enabled boxes or by connecting old boxes to a computer in the next room via a power line extender.

Facebook Launches A Live Stream Box, Partners With Ustream

Today, Facebook is launching a new “Live Stream Box” feature which allows for Facebook Pages to offer their own live video and chat area. And Ustream will be the first to take advantage of it with Ustream on Facebook, a new service to provide live video support to select Facebook users.

This functionality is an extension of what Ustream and Facebook did with some Jonas Brothers concerts last month — events which drew huge numbers. How huge? This huge, according to Ustream:

■1.5 million unique posts were made via Facebook Live Feed
■23K average posts per minute
■More than 100K users joined the webcast after seeing their friend’s comment on Facebook
■974K total unique viewers watched the one hour webcast
■Ustream reports the Jonas Brothers webcast on Facebook surpassed the largest live video event they have hosted for any music artist
So clearly, there’s a big demand for certain live events via Facebook, and Ustream is jumping on it, as Facebook’s preferred partner.

Apparently, how this will work is that on Facebook Pages there will now be a way to add a “Live” tab, which will house things such as the Ustream on Facebook feature. Previously, beyond the Jonas Brothers, Facebook has tested this with CNN and the NBA All-Star game. Here’s what Facebook has to say:

Today, Facebook is launching the Facebook Live Stream Box as a feature that any website owner or developer can use to enable Facebook users to connect, share, and post updates in real-time as they witness an event online. Websites can run the Live Stream Box next to live streaming videos of concerts, speeches, sporting events, webcasts, TV shows, presentations, or webinars. Sites can also run the Live Stream Box in multi-player games, or with any other experience where many people are visiting a website at the same time.

But Ustream’s funtionality is not for everyone yet, due to what will undoubtedly be high demand, we’re told. Any artist or person who thinks they could benefit from the Ustream functionality, can apply to have the feature turned on here. With it, you’ll get not only the live player, but a customizable banner that can link to places like iTunes or Amazon (obviously important for artists).

Right now, there are two versions of the player: A free ad-supported version, and a white-label version. The free version is the one with limited sign-ups allowed right now, so click that link above quickly if you think you need the feature. The white-label version comes with a one-time development fee of $15,000. But you also get an ongoing subscription to Ustream’s white-label platform, Watershed.

Find out more information here. Eventually, Ustream hopes to port this Facebook experience over to its main site as well using Facebook Connect, we’re told.

Microsoft Silverlight puts the shine into online TV experience

“An ageing sports star” was how Setanta Sports saw its previous pay-per-view portal — and what drove this Irish Internet and pay-TV sports broadcaster to develop one that would also deliver HD content faster. Setanta, which wanted the new site to provide its subscribers with greater functionality for a more customised engagement, recognised that the portal would need a premium content-delivery system.

In another situation, MTV Network saw that its enterprise asset-management system, ALIAS (Archive Library Information Access System), a static application supporting only videotape-based assets, needed a make-over. It sought to transform the system into one that could support both digital and tape assets. In -addition to this, the new solution would need to enhance system efficiencies and streamline the workflow for users.

Both companies found their solutions in suites of technologies based on the Microsoft Silverlight.

Silverlight is the next-generation cross-browser, cross-platform and cross-device plug-in for delivering Microsoft .NET-based media experiences and rich interactive applications for the Web. The .NET framework is an integral component of the Microsoft Windows operating system that provides a programming model and manages the runtime for Web services, Web applications and smart client applications.

Scoring for Setanta Sports

To create a content-delivery system, -Setanta engaged Microsoft and Microsoft partner EMC Conchango, as well as Irdeto and Swarmcast, to build Setanta-i using the Silverlight, the .NET framework, and partner technologies from Swarmcast and Irdeto.

This new delivery system has a premium front-end interface that is backed by a powerful back-end. It enables Setanta to deliver HD video with cost-effective, advanced streaming and provides subscribers with high-resolution interactivity.

With Setanta-i, Setanta said that its subscribers now have video-streaming services akin to having the best seats in the house. Avid sports fans can now watch their favourite matches in HD Windows Media Video (VC-1) format without the frustration brought on by buffering, espe-cially during the most crucial moments of the games. And, if they have missed a particular match, or simply want to relive the winning moments, a huge library of on-demand content awaits their selection.

This new system also offers a wide array of personalisation options that not only add to the entertainment value but also increase the excitement of watching the games online.

On the UK homepage, for example, subscribers can watch live streams of four channels simultaneously on miniature display or watch one on full screen.

Sports fans following and keeping tabs of various events taking place at the same time can, while watching a live match in one window, open -another window showing real-time scores in other matches. They can also select the games they wish to follow and only the scores from those matches will be displayed. Moreover, these subscribers can -select upcoming sporting events that they would like to record for later viewing and create video playlists of favourite sports moments.

With the modern, slick Setanta-i service developed by EMC Conchango, subscri-bers are not only spoilt for choice, but also enjoy a greater scope to cus-tomise viewing options without detracting from their experience of the content.

Setanta has also added to this sophisticated, feature-rich interface, a second one that presents free content to casual visitors and a third, which can be used for the Web pages of other sites to present syndicated news and content from Setanta.

These front-end interfaces are sup-ported by an effective back-end. With software from Irdeto and Swarmcast, Setanta has upgraded and enhanced the content-delivery infrastructure that would stream content to the new interfaces. The software from Irdeto enabled Setanta to build a new infrastructure for ingesting sports content and preparing it for distribution over the Internet, while the software from Swarmcast optimises streaming media for delivery using hypertext transfer protocol (HTTP).

Setanta, EMC Conchango and Irdeto are thus able to create a client-server connection that ensures a smooth, buffer-free, high-quality video stream. Furthermore, emanating from this powerful back-end content-management system is a linear channel that feeds sports content to external websites using the syndicated Setanta interface.

The software from Irdeto also integrates with the Setanta customer care-and-billing systems, ensuring that customers can access the protected content to which they have subscribed, and are billed appro-priately for the services used.

With its new content-management -system feeding content to the station’s different channels, Setanta has gained better content-delivery efficiency and greater flexibility to bundle services, and cross- and up-sell these services.

Stephen Michael, director of New Media for Setanta Sports, said: “As a broadcaster, I think we’re fairly bold in embracing these new technologies. The Silverlight and Swarmcast are both fairly new, but I think people will see that what we’ve created in Setanta-i is a market-leading product.

“We hope our customers will agree that we’ve built a great interface. One of the things ... really great about it is that it doesn’t get in the way of your enjoyment of the content. That’s one of the things that will make Setanta-i a great service for sports lovers.”

Watch Free Streaming Movies Online

The internet is becoming more and more advanced. There are quite a number of things that you can do online today that would not have been possible a number of years ago. The web is becoming an important place for commercial transactions and trading ventures. Bills are settled online, and products are bought online on commercial web sites such as e-bay. Instead of joining the usual long queues that are mainly present in banks, a large number of customers are opting to carry out their tasks online in what is commonly referred to as online banking by the I.T. people.

The internet is also educational in that a lot of information can be accessed from it. Scholars and students benefit greatly from it, in that the information is accessible 24 hours a day, ready to be utilized. This was not possible before the internet came into being. If you wanted information or viewpoints from a person in Australia in an in-depth form, the only option would have been to fly to Australia to hear it from that person.

Also, communication has been greatly improved through the internet. There are many services available, including e-mailing, video conferencing and chatting. You can also use a web cam to see and talk to the other person.

Of late, the internet has become a very big source of entertainment material. You can access blogs, chat rooms and movie web sites for very little in terms of payment. Movies are being uploaded on the web at an alarmingly fast rate. In fact, some movies debut on the internet first before they open to cinemas and other places.

It is possible to watch movies online through streaming. The movies are uploaded onto a server anywhere in the world. Through multimedia streaming, you can view just about any movie available online. There are those that are blocked and you might need special permission in order to access the website on which the movie is loaded.

There are a number of stages involved in the streaming process. When a user follows a link to a particular movie clip on the web, your browser software will send out a request to the server on which the clip is held anywhere in the world.

In response, the server will stream the clip to your computer continuously, forming the stream. Once the data is received by your computer, it will automatically open the media player software contained in your computer. Once the player is open, the data being streamed to your computer is stored in a buffer. It may take a while for all the data to be received, depending on your bandwidth and to some extent the speed of your computer. This requires you to be patient.

Five Allows Viewers To Embed Streaming TV Shows On Websites

In a major revamp to its online offerings, broadcaster Five will now facilitate its viewers to integrate full episodes of their favourite programmes from the channel onto their blogs, social networking portals, and websites.

The broadcaster has inked a deal with the online video portal Brightcove, and has become the UK's first broadcaster that will enable users to embed and share channel's content on third party websites.

The company asserted that the move, which is expected to materialise later this year, will offer the ability to enhance the distribution of ad-supported video content over the web, and thereby help in generating more advertising revenues.

Five's digital controller Paul Thornton-Jones touted the new move by saying, “Our syndicated player initiative significantly extends the reach of our online video programming in a way that’s secure, high quality and which generates additional ad revenue”.

Several partner sites and Five's own online services, including Five.tv and FiveFWD, a portal containing info on cars and gadgets, will be among the first websites to take advantage of the initiative.

The average length of the content will be around 45 minutes, and initially viewers can embed some of the prominent shows, including Home & Away, Neighbours, and Fifth Gear.

Is Internet TV A Step Backwards?

Some people are saying that watching TV streams on a PC screen is a step backwards and why would anyone want to watch TV online?

Having to wait whilst a TV stream loads, watching it on a tiny screen, having to be connected to the net. Why do it? However, in contradiction to this argument, how comes every TV network and large organisation on the planet is pushing video and TV content onto the internet and into our homes?

There are so many websites now that give us the content that would traditionally be found on a television set, full length TV shows and movies complete with commercial breaks.

The big question is though, will this TV streaming on our PCs uproot us from sitting on the couch in front of the television set? There are many people now that have thrown out the TV in favour of watching TV via their computer screen.

The reason for the prolification of websites such as Hulu, Youtube and all of the Television Networks coming online, is because they all know that this is where the future belongs.

Wether you like it or not, the television in your front room is becoming obsolete. Although you may well still have a big screen on the wall, it will be connected to a device such as a PC, cable device, set-top box, games console, TiVo amongst others. And that solitary experience of watching a TV show at 7pm on a Saturday night will be gone forever.

You will now use that big screen to watch TV and movies on demand. At a time of your choosing. You will interact with other fans around the world of 24 or House. Cameron Diaz fans will all chat and make comments while watching her latest movie. Bomb or a hit? You decide.

You will be able to play games and music, program shows, browse Ebay or Facebook. Order a pizza. And that is something you would never associate TV with 5 years ago.

The Networks are all involved and the public interest is high. So why arent we all watching online yet?

There is a bandwidth issue and the slow loading times of some streams have been an issue. But with the leaps and bounds in technology and internet TV development, soon everyone will be literally forced to start watching online.

With the new wave of Internet enabled TV sets and the massive interest and money being poured into the sector, you can bet your life that rather than being a step backwards. It is a redefining moment in our history and something we should all be welcoming.

Universal, Warner blocks Zattoo

BERLIN — A court in Hamburg has granted Universal and Warner Bros. a preliminary injunction against Swiss streaming video portal Zattoo for running commercial spots with their films.
Zattoo bundles Germany's free TV channels on its Internet site as free web streams but adds online advertising to the content as part of its business model.

Warner and Universal are suing the IPTV provider, saying its agreement with German channels does not allow it to insert commercials into its films.

The majors are seeking additional license fees from Zattoo, which has been blocked from streaming Warner and Universal films until a settlement is reached.

Launched in 2005, Zattoo boasts more than 4.2 million registered users, 40% of which stem from Germany. The service is also available in Denmark, France, Spain, Switzerland and the U.K

YouTube prepping UK TV show streaming

YouTube is in talks to bring full length TV show streaming to the UK, and the negotiations are going down right now!

YouTube has been tinkering with full length video streaming in the US recently, but the video sharing site is planning to rollout a similar set up here in the UK.

A senior source at Sony Pictures told New Media Age that a deal was being carved out right now: “YouTube’s aim is to do something with long-form. We are in discussions with it about that.” Those in the know at both ITV and Channel 4 meanwhile have said that YouTube is at the table with broadcasters too.

Hulu Streaming to U.K. in September? Not Until ITV and Channel 4 Are Satisfied

American TV aficionados living in the U.K. will get a fabulous gift in September, when web-TV streaming company Hulu opens its service there, according to new rumors. But as well as endless Stargate and Family Guy, they'll also get their own ITV and Channel 4.

The rumors come from U.K. broadsheet newspaper The Telegraph, which has heard from the usual "sources," who are apparently close to the negotiations, that Hulu's in deep discussions with management from ITV and Channel 4: That's Britain's premier ad-supported channel, and the country's alternative-programming fourth terrestrial channel. More than 3,000 hours of American TV content is also on the table.

There's also word that some content from the BBC may be available too. If true, that represents a new step for the national broadcaster, since it currently distributes episodes online only via its extremely popular catch-up BBC iPlayer service. Apparently Hulu's negotiations are hung up on the issue of advertising--Hulu's trying to push a model that's worked in the U.S. but both Channel 4 and ITV, which currently manage their own advertising content, want to retain control.

This is a big move for Hulu, since it would give the company access to the highly web-connected Britons, who are about as fond of their TV as their U.S. cousins. And that sounds like an excellent way to expand the business, when the latest Nielsen poll shows that though internet streaming TV consumption is on the rise, 99% of all U.S. TV is still watched the traditional way: on the telly.
